Amlay Family History

Igshaan’s Grandparents, Achmad Dawood and Amina Amlay, had 8 children (5 boys and 3 girls) of which his father, Nizaamoedien, was the third eldest son. He owned a shop and the only Halaal butchery in Simonstown Main Road. His Grandfather was the first Indian Councillor of the then Simonstown Municipality. Shortly after his retirement as a Councillor he was given a letter telling him that he and his family had to move out as the area had been declared a white area under the Group Areas Act. 

In 1969 his father bought a house in Grassy Park, a new suburb located on the Cape Flats. He worked for Marine Oil Refiners (which was situated next to the cemetery where the new Mall was built) until his retirement in 1995. 

In 1981 he bought a house in Wynberg so that the family could be closer to the trains and busses in order to travel. His father initiated a Land Claim in 1994 with the intention of getting his family back to Simonstown. In 1997 he sadly passed away of Prostate Cancer before he could realise this initiative.

Igshaan is currently acting as a trustee on behalf of the family regarding the Amlay Land Claim and hopes to complete his dream of returning back to his roots.
